Shillong, July 1: The 7th edition of the East Khasi Hills Badminton Championship organized by the East Khasi Hills District Badminton Association concluded here on Saturday. Altogether, 120 shuttlers participated in the event ranging from boys, girls, women and men categories respectively.

T Passah, Project Director of DRDA, East Khasi Hills District was the chief guest on the occasion.

The Association said that the district has no dearth of talents and there are numbers of potential shuttlers who can rise to the higher level and become at par with national players only if their talents are moulded and shaped at an early age. Therefore, the East Khasi Hills District Badminton Association is committed to promote and develop the sports of Badminton in the District.

However, the Association is hitting a major road block in its effort for two major reasons, viz. the lack of indoor sports facilities and sponsorship.

While organising the 2023 championship the Association had to face multiple constraints as there was no indoor facility in the city which is conducive for hosting such an event.

“As we are all aware that the U Tirot Sing Indoor Stadium at Lachumiere had been dismantled to give way for a Bhavan and the JN Sports Complex at Polo also is under massive renovation. Nonetheless with the proactive support of Isawanda Laloo, Director of Sports and Youth Affairs the Association was able to manage and conduct the 2023 Championship successfully,” it said.

However, the Association is determined to explore the possibilities of establishing a proper indoor sports facility to conduct regular training and tournaments. For this, the Association has urged upon the Government to facilitate and provide to the Association a plot of land for the construction of indoor sports facilities and also the Association has appealed to business and corporate houses in the city to support and partner with the Association in promoting and sponsoring tournaments and potential young shuttlers.
