Guwahati, Sept 21: It was like a sea of humanity walking alongside their beloved singer, Zubeen Garg. Thousands thronged the roads of Guwahati on Sunday to pay their last respects as his mortal remains were taken in a 25-km-long procession from the airport to his Kahilipara residence.
The journey, which spanned five and a half hours, wound through a massive crowd of mourners. People of all ages and backgrounds lined the streets, showering flowers on the ambulance carrying the icon’s body—their grief etched in chants, tears, and silence.
When the cortege reached his Kahilipara home, emotions spilt over as mourners rushed for one final glimpse of the singer who had given Assam its soundtrack of love, rebellion, and belonging. Draped in a traditional Assamese gamosa, Garg’s mortal remains were later placed in a glass casket at Sarusajai Stadium.
As if the skies themselves mourned, rain lashed the stadium shortly after the casket’s arrival. Fans who had waited for hours under the blazing sun stood drenched but undeterred. Umbrellas or not, the crowd held firm, determined to honour the man they had claimed as their own.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Garg’s mortal remains would remain at Sarusajai through the night and the following day to allow more people to pay homage. “More and more people wish to see our beloved Zubeen one last time, and we deeply understand these sentiments,” Sarma said in a post on X.
His wife, fashion designer Garima Garg, who accompanied the body, broke down as she addressed the fans. “Had Zubeen been alive today, he would have been overwhelmed by this show of love. He cannot express himself in words anymore, and on his behalf, I thank each of you,” she said through tears.
“It was because of this love and blessings that he achieved so much in such a short life. Zubeen always wanted people to live in peace and harmony. Today, this gathering of people from all communities proves that he belonged to all,” she added, urging mourners to pay homage peacefully.
Throughout the night, thousands camped outside the stadium, singing his songs, holding cut-outs of his image, and sharing their grief. Inside, dignitaries, family members, and government officials bowed before the casket, laying flowers in solemn tribute.
The farewell sparked an outpouring on social media. One user wrote: “For millennial Axomiyas like me and those who grew up in Assam, Zubeen will always be larger than life. He’s left an entire state grieving. Never seen anything like this, never will. Farewell, legend.”
Another posted: “I doubt our generation has seen this kind of collective outpouring of grief for any artist. Don’t think we’ll see this again in our lifetime. For us 90s kids growing up amid unending political turbulence in Assam, Zubeen’s voice was like a lighthouse. Go in peace.”
Actor Adil Hussain also called the moment a rare phenomenon:
“A human ocean walking with their beloved singer, Zubeen Garg. He occupied a place in our hearts that very few have in our generation. Art can change people, society, and a nation. He became the melodious expression of the unspoken feelings of millions. They are sobbing uncontrollably… His afterlife journey begins now. Let us pray for his peaceful transition into the divine dimension.”
Meanwhile, the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced plans for a special tribute during the opening ceremony of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. ACA member and BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said, “In keeping with the sentiments of the people and in honour of someone who truly deserves respect, we are planning a 40-minute tribute programme during the World Cup’s opening.”
For Assam, this farewell was not just for a singer but for a voice that became the heartbeat of a generation. Zubeen Garg’s songs will continue to echo across the land, but the silence he leaves behind is immeasurable.
