Aadhaar helps reunite missing divyang girl with family in Assam after nearly a year

Guwahati, April 25: A missing divyang girl from Assam’s Charaideo district has been reunited with her family nearly a year after she went missing, with Aadhaar-based biometric identification playing a crucial role in tracing her identity.

The child, who has intellectual disabilities and is unable to communicate, was reunited with her family on April 25, 2026, with the support of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the Child Welfare Committee, local police, and child care institutions.

She was originally found wandering alone at Dilli Ghat in Namrup, Dibrugarh district, on May 29, 2025. Local residents alerted the police, who took her into custody before she was produced before the Child Welfare Committee, Dibrugarh. She was later sent to Mrinaljyoti Jyotiniwas Children Home in Duliajan for care and protection.

With no means of communication and no identifying details, authorities struggled to trace her family. After conventional methods failed, the children’s home sought help from UIDAI’s regional office in Guwahati.

Officials advised enrolling the child for Aadhaar using her fingerprint biometrics, enabling a possible match with existing records in the database.

The breakthrough came when her biometric data matched an existing Aadhaar record, revealing her identity and home address in Borhat Tea Estate in Charaideo district.

Using these details, authorities traced her family and completed the reunification process.

Officials said the case underscores the role of Aadhaar in identity verification, particularly in cases involving vulnerable individuals who are unable to communicate.

UIDAI has also urged parents and guardians to ensure timely Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBU) for children aged 5–7 years and 15–17 years, so that Aadhaar records remain accurate and useful in critical situations.
