Tura, July 28: The A.chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), South Western Zone has voiced concerns over alleged illegal settlements in the border villages of Takuranbari and Ishakuri.
They submitted a formal appeal to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of South West Garo Hills on Monday.
In its memorandum, AHAM claimed that unidentified individuals from Muslim communities have been steadily encroaching on land in the two villages, allegedly with support from certain local residents.
The organisation alleged that these settlers are using fake documents, including ration cards, to obtain voter identity cards—leading to what they describe as an unnatural spike in population every election cycle due to illegal migration.
Although a joint inspection was conducted on February 21, 2023, in response to earlier complaints, AHAM noted with concern that no follow-up action has been taken by the authorities since then.
The group further raised objections to Assam Government schemes such as the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) being implemented in these disputed villages, which AHAM asserts lie well within Meghalaya’s jurisdiction. They argue that such interventions only encourage further encroachment.
As part of their demands, AHAM has called for a door-to-door re-verification of voter identity cards and supporting documents submitted over the past decade in Takuranbari and Ishakuri.
Additionally, the organisation flagged Mirjumala, a known border transit point between Assam and Meghalaya, as a hotspot for illegal activities including robbery, drug trafficking, and undocumented migration. They warned that ongoing eviction drives in Assam may push displaced individuals to settle in these vulnerable villages, potentially endangering the tribal demography and cultural identity of the region.
AHAM’s appeal urged the district authorities to conduct immediate verification drives, intensify surveillance and take concrete steps to safeguard the territorial and demographic integrity of the region.
