Guwahati, Mar 7: Uncertainty has emerged over a possible alliance between the Congress and regional party Raijor Dal, led by Akhil Gogoi, ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi went live on Facebook from Kaziranga Orchid Park to express disappointment over the lack of progress in alliance talks with the Indian National Congress.
During the live video, Gogoi spoke about his frustration over the ongoing political developments. At the same time, he highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the formation of a broader opposition unity against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Sources said there has been a disagreement between the Congress and Raijor Dal over seat sharing.
“The APCC, led by Gaurav Gogoi, is not happy with Raijor Dal as the party has been bargaining for more seats. At the same time, the Congress does not fully trust them,” a source said.
Meanwhile, Akhil Gogoi has been waiting in the Kaziranga area in the hope of holding discussions with Congress leaders regarding a possible alliance. However, no such meeting took place.
Talking to reporters, Gogoi said it was “insulting” that the Congress held a press conference announcing an alliance with four parties while leaving out Raijor Dal.
“The ball is now in Congress’s court,” Gogoi said, indicating that the next move must come from the Congress leadership. He also said he would wait until midnight for any response regarding the alliance discussions.
In the last Assembly elections, Raijor Dal won only one seat, with Akhil Gogoi securing victory from the Sivasagar constituency. This time, the party wants to contest more seats and has submitted its proposal to alliance partners. However, Congress leaders are reportedly not satisfied with Raijor Dal’s functioning.
In recent times, Raijor Dal has built a support base among minorities in lower Assam, with several prominent leaders from the minority community joining the party.
Raijor Dal, a regional political party, emerged after the anti-CAA movement, with Akhil Gogoi becoming its chief patron.
The developments come a day after Gaurav Gogoi indicated that the Congress had finalised its alliance with four opposition parties in the state. However, he has not clarified whether Raijor Dal is part of the alliance.
