Agartala, July 25: Amid growing political pressure over the mysterious death of former Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag, the state police on Friday constituted a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a comprehensive probe into the case.

The SIT will be headed by West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak. The other members are Additional SP (Urban) Dhruba Nath and Sub-Inspector Subhojit Deb, who has been investigating the Unnatural Death (UD) case.

According to an order issued by the Director General of Police, the SIT has been authorised to co-opt officers from the Tripura Police Crime Branch or any other police unit if required. It can also seek technical assistance from the Cyber Crime Unit during the investigation.

The probe team has been directed to submit weekly progress reports to the Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), who will forward them to the DGP.

The decision comes days after the body of former DGP Anurag was found inside the washroom attached to his official chamber at the State Police Headquarters in Agartala on July 20, triggering widespread speculation and political controversy.

While Chief Minister Manik Saha, citing the post-mortem report, has said the cause of death was hanging, the Opposition CPI(M) and Congress have questioned the circumstances surrounding the incident and are demanding a High Court-monitored judicial inquiry, arguing that only an independent probe can establish what led to the senior police officer’s death.

The constitution of the SIT marks the government’s first major step towards addressing the high-profile case, even as demands for a judicial investigation continue to gather momentum.
