Amit Shah to visit Assam on 3-day tour ahead of Assembly polls

Guwahati, Feb 19: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will arrive in Assam’s Silchar on Thursday night for a three-day visit to the state, ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

According to sources, Shah will stay overnight in Silchar in Cachar district. On Friday, he is scheduled to visit the BSF’s Natunpur border outpost along the India-Bangladesh border to review the security situation.

He will also attend an event under the Centre’s Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP), an initiative of the Union Home Ministry aimed at strengthening border infrastructure and improving livelihoods in frontier areas.

“Shah will address a public meeting, and the BJP is working to mobilise a large gathering of party workers and local residents,” sources said.

The VVP focuses on livelihood generation, promotion of tourism and cultural heritage, skill development, and strengthening agriculture and allied sectors in border villages.

BJP leaders said the party plans to combine its development narrative with border security issues in its campaign outreach across the Valley.

The Barak Valley — comprising 13 Assembly constituencies across Cachar, Sribhumi and Hailakandi districts — shares a long and porous border with Bangladesh and has a Muslim-majority demographic profile. The region has traditionally witnessed multi-cornered electoral contests.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, the BJP won six seats in Barak Valley, the Congress secured five, while the AIUDF won four. Following delimitation, the number of Assembly seats in the Valley was reduced from 15 to 13.

Sources said Shah’s visit is significant as the BJP is making concerted efforts to improve its performance in Barak Valley, a region largely dominated by the Bengali-speaking population.
