Shillong, Aug 15: The A’chik NEHU Students’ Union (ANSU) has vehemently condemned the recent ‘barbaric’ assault of its Advisor, who is pursuing LLM at North Eastern Hill University’s Shillong Campus, on August 13, 2023, at NEHU Hostel No. 20, around 11 pm.
In a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of NEHU, the ANSU has expressed deep concerns over the incident and demanded immediate and decisive action against the attackers. The Union has urged the NEHU administration, police authorities, and the State government to swiftly address the situation by taking stringent measures against the assailants.
An FIR regarding the incident has already been filed at Mawlai Police Station on August 14, 2023.
In the letter to the VC, ANSU underscored that the assault was not merely a clash between different communities, but a disruption of the peaceful coexistence within the campus. However, the union clarified that the incident involved only two assailants from different regions and backgrounds, with both pursuing their studies at NEHU.
Mentionably, the victim belongs to Garo Community.
Nonetheless, they stressed that many students from outside Shillong reside in NEHU hostels for safety and convenience, and such incidents not only jeopardize student safety but also tarnish the reputation of the institution.
“University is supposed to be a Place which moulds it’s students to be a civilised and responsible individuals, such activities within the university must not be tolerated,” the Union said whilst reminding that many such incidents in the campus have been brushed under the carpet in the name of compromise.
However, it warned that if no decisive action is taken against such acts of crime, it could set a dangerous precedent for future incidents and “such act will go unpunished in future, and the kind of incident may occur much in future inside the campus/hostels with an expectation that there is no repercussion.” In order to prevent such crimes in future, ANSU demanded prompt measures to address the current situation effectively.
The ANSU underscored that stern action be taken against the accused criminals and goons for their ‘barbaric act’ towards fellow NEHU student and further demanded that the assailants should not be allowed to reside in the Hostel.
