Shillong, Sept 17: Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh, on Tuesday called for an end to ‘political drama’ over a Hindu group’s bid to declare cow as the “mother of India” and to ban cow slaughter.
She instead called for mutual respect among ethnic groups, urging that each group should honour others’ traditions and beliefs just as they respect their own so that India will remain a vibrant democracy.
The Jagatguru Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati has proposed to hold a ‘cow protection march’ in Shillong on October 2, which has drawn criticism from all across Meghalaya.
Responding to the request by the Hindu group to organize a rally in support of declaring the cow as the “mother of India”, Ampareen said Meghalaya has its own distinct culture and external influences should not be imposed on it.
She warned that actions or intentions that disturb the peace should not be tolerated, noting that there are laws in place to address such disruptions.
Ampareen further stated that Meghalaya is a peaceful state which has its own culture and customs and any attempts to incite division or hatred should be prevented as these “political dramas” should not be allowed to upset the peace of the people of Meghalaya.
