SHILLONG, JAN 10: The Meghalaya ASHA Workers Union has chosen to maintain its indefinite strike, despite the government’s assurance to release pending incentives to over 7,000 ASHA workers across the state by January 24. The decision was taken following a meeting with the Joint Director of the National Health Mission (NHM).

Speaking after the meeting, president of the union Mira June Marsing said the Joint Director NHM has requested the union to call off the strike, but the union is taking a cautious approach.

“The department has assured us that all pending incentives will be released by January 24. We have decided to wait till then, and the period will be considered a holiday for ASHAs who are not entitled to get holidays.”

The president said that the NHM officials have attributed the delay in releasing incentives to technical problems with the system.

“It’s State Accountant had assured that there is no shortage of funds in the NHM…but the delay was only due to some technical problems in the system.”

Marsing added, “We will discuss with all workers before taking a decision on whether to call off the strike. The decision to call for a strike was a unanimous decision of all 7,082 ASHA workers, and we need to consult them before taking any further action.”
