Guwahati, Feb 27: The Assam Cabinet has recommended to the Gauhati High Court the constitution of a fast-track court for the day-to-day hearing of the murder case of Zubeen Garg, in a move aimed at expediting the judicial process.
Speaking to reporters, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the decision was taken to ensure a speedy trial and timely justice. “The move aims to ensure a speedy trial and timely justice in the case,” he said.
The decision follows repeated appeals from the victim’s family, who have sought the establishment of a special court to guarantee a fair and time-bound trial. Over the past several weeks, family members have urged authorities to prevent procedural delays and ensure that justice is delivered without undue prolongation.
If accepted, the Gauhati High Court will appoint a special judge to preside over the fast-track court. Once the appointment is made, hearings in the case are expected to proceed on a day-to-day basis.
Legal observers note that fast-track courts are designed to prioritise sensitive and high-profile cases, minimising delays and ensuring focused judicial attention.
