Guwahati, Oct 2: In a major development in the probe into the death of singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore, the Assam CID on Thursday arrested Garg’s long-time aide and bandmate Sekhar Jyoti Goswami, along with his co-singer Amritprava Mahanta, after several days of questioning, sources in SIT reveal.

Both Goswami and Amritprava were reportedly part of the yacht party in Singapore on September 19, the day Zubeen drowned, and were present at the scene. Investigators noted that Goswami was seen in video footage swimming very close to Garg, while Amritprava is said to have recorded the entire sequence of events on her mobile phone.

CID sources confirmed that the duo had been under interrogation for nearly six days before their arrest. They are expected to be confronted with festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Zubeen’s manager Siddhartha Sarma, both of whom were arrested earlier this week.

The FIR, initially registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, conspiracy, and negligence, has now been expanded to include murder charges.

Sharma was arrested from an apartment in Gurugram, while Mahanta was detained at Delhi airport upon his return from Singapore on Wednesday.

Sources say the Special Investigation Team is focusing on piecing together the sequence of events aboard the yacht that led to the death of the 52-year-old singer, who was scheduled to perform at the North-East Festival in Singapore a day later.
