Assam CID busts fake government job racket

Guwahati, June 28: The Assam Crime Investigation Department (CID) has cracked a fake government recruitment racket that allegedly duped job aspirants by promising appointments in the state’s Water Resources Department and arrested seven people in connection with the scam.

According to CID officials, the accused operated an organised network that targeted unemployed youths, collecting amounts ranging from thousands to several lakhs of rupees in exchange for purported government jobs.

The racket allegedly issued forged appointment letters, fabricated government seals and fake recruitment notices in the name of the Water Resources Department, making victims believe they had secured legitimate government employment.

A case has been registered at the CID Police Station as CID PS Case No. 04/25 under Sections 61(2), 318(4), 336(3) and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The latest arrest came on Friday when Gunamoni Baishya was apprehended from Nalbari district, taking the total number of arrests in the case to seven.

CID officials said investigations are continuing to identify other members of the network and ascertain the scale of the fraud.

The agency has urged job seekers to verify all recruitment notices through official government channels and warned against making any payment in exchange for government employment.

The latest crackdown comes amid growing concerns over fake recruitment scams in Assam, with fraudsters increasingly exploiting the aspirations of unemployed youths by using forged documents and impersonating government agencies.
