Assam CM flags foreign interference in 2026 Assembly polls

Must read

Guwahati, June 4: Expressing concern on the role of foreign entities in the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today revealed that half of the 2,000 Facebook accounts that are actively commenting on Assam’s political landscape are being operated from Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Sarma has tasked the Assam Police’s Special Branch with investigating these accounts to determine their origins and intentions. He emphasised the potential threat posed by foreign interference, stating that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan aims to sway the election outcome in favour of a particular candidate.

“The number of fictitious accounts will increase as elections draw near. ISI wants a particular candidate to win, and I will provide more details on September 10,” Sarma told reporters in Guwahati.

He further alleged that a call centre has been established in Kolkata to manage these accounts, noting that 2,000 accounts associated with a specific community appeared in a single day. Sarma indicated that these developments are under close observation and promised to disclose more information by September.

In addition, Sarma mentioned that several Bangladeshi nationals were recently repatriated, asserting that the state government acted in alignment with the sentiments of the Assamese people.

The Chief Minister also reiterated allegations against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, claiming that Gogoi’s British wife, Elizabeth Colburn, has “good relations” with the Pakistan Army. Sarma alleged that Colburn travelled between India and Pakistan 19 times and was accompanied by Pakistani Army officials during her visits. He further claimed that Colburn received a salary from a Pakistan-based NGO while working in India.

Gogoi has refuted these allegations, describing them as baseless and politically motivated. He clarified that his wife worked in Pakistan for a year as part of a climate change project over a decade ago, and he visited her once during that period. Gogoi has challenged the Chief Minister to provide concrete evidence to support his claims.

The Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) is currently probing the matter, and Sarma has stated that he will present supporting documents on September 10, following the completion of the investigation.
