Assam eyes ₹700-crore concert economy, emerges as India’s next live entertainment hub

GUWAHATI, June 11: Assam could generate more than ₹700 crore in economic impact over the next five years by building a sustained pipeline of large-scale music events, according to a new report that positions the state as one of India’s fastest-rising concert tourism destinations.

The report, The Assam Blueprint: Turning Live Music Economy into a Tourism Multiplier, released by Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC), BookMyShow and consulting firm EY-Parthenon, argues that live entertainment can evolve from a cultural attraction into a major economic driver for the state.

The findings are based on an assessment of global music star Post Malone’s first-ever India solo headline concert in Guwahati, which organisers say generated an estimated ₹43 crore in total economic impact, including ₹32 crore in direct spending within Assam and nearly ₹5 crore in GST revenue.

The concert attracted around 20,000 attendees despite airline disruptions, with more than half travelling from outside Guwahati and arriving from over 200 cities and towns across India.
According to the report, the economic ripple effect extended well beyond ticket sales. For every ₹100 spent on a concert ticket, attendees spent nearly ₹899 on hotels, transport, food, shopping and other local services.
Hotels in Guwahati reported a nearly 30% jump in occupancy during the concert weekend, while ride demand increased by more than 50%. Restaurants, cafés and retail establishments also recorded significant increases in customer footfall.

The report identifies Assam and the wider Northeast as India’s next major live entertainment frontier, citing a strong music culture, growing audience demand and improving infrastructure. Assam hosted 55 ticketed events in 2025, while Guwahati recorded a 188% surge in live-event attendance, reflecting the region’s growing importance on national touring circuits.
ATDC Managing Director Kumar Padmapani Bora said the state’s concert economy strategy goes beyond entertainment.

“For Assam, the concert economy is about tourism, culture, youth engagement and economic growth working together. Our objective is to create a facilitative ecosystem where large events become repeatable opportunities that attract visitors, generate employment and showcase Assam to national and global audiences,” he said.
BookMyShow Chief Business Officer for Live Events Naman Pugalia said the Northeast represents one of the most promising growth markets for India’s live entertainment sector.
“The Post Malone concert demonstrated that world-class live experiences can create economic value far beyond the venue, benefiting tourism, hospitality, local businesses and employment,” he said.

The report also highlights the employment impact of large-scale concerts. The Post Malone event mobilised nearly 2,500 personnel across security, logistics, hospitality, production and venue operations, while creating opportunities for local vendors and service providers.

With global rock band Guns N’ Roses scheduled to perform in Guwahati later this year, officials believe Assam is steadily transforming from a peripheral market into a major player in India’s rapidly expanding experience economy.

The report concludes that Assam’s combination of policy support, infrastructure investment, hospitality growth and institutional coordination could provide a blueprint for other states seeking to leverage live entertainment as a tool for tourism-led economic development.
