Guwahati, June 25: Assam has unveiled plans to transform Assam into a thermal power hub.

This is being done as the energy demand is projected to rise to 5,000 MW by 2030 and 7,000 MW by 2035.

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday visited the proposed site for a 3,400 MW thermal power plant at Chirakuta Charuwa Bakra in Bilasipara (Co-District), Dhubri.

Spread across 3,300 bighas, 2 kathas and 15 lechas, the site is being evaluated for one of the state’s most ambitious power generation projects to date.

During the visit, Dr. Sarma inspected the area, interacted with residents, and assured them of government-mandated rehabilitation grants for those legally residing on the land.

The Cabinet had approved the Assam Thermal Power Generation Project Promotion Policy 2025 on May 5 to attract large-scale investment into the sector.
A tender for the proposed thermal plant will be floated shortly, officials confirmed.

“This project is a vital step in securing Assam’s energy future and will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for our youth,” the Chief Minister said, urging cooperation from the local community to facilitate smooth implementation.

Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota accompanied Dr. Sarma during the site visit.
