Assam Health Minister reviews AMCH, sets goal of top-50 medical college status

Dibrugarh, June 30: Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal on Tuesday reviewed healthcare services and infrastructure at the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) and set an ambitious target of transforming the premier institution into one of the top 50 medical colleges in the country.

During his visit, Singhal inspected the Super Speciality Block, Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Block and the Casualty Ward, and interacted with patients to assess the quality of medical services, availability of medicines, cleanliness and other facilities.

The minister later chaired a high-level review meeting attended by the Principal, Superintendent, heads of departments, professors and senior doctors of AMCH. The meeting reviewed the hospital’s infrastructure, manpower, patient care management and progress of ongoing expansion projects.

Singhal issued a series of strategic directives aimed at improving healthcare delivery and strengthening the institution’s overall performance.

He also chaired a separate review meeting with officials of the Dibrugarh District Health and Family Welfare Department to assess progress on key health indicators, including screening for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the tuberculosis eradication campaign, and maternal and child health programmes.

The minister directed officials to meet targets within stipulated deadlines, intensify field-level monitoring and strengthen accountability mechanisms to ensure quality healthcare services.
Praising the efforts of doctors, nurses and healthcare workers at AMCH and across the district health department, Singhal said he would return to Dibrugarh in the near future to review the progress of various health programmes.

The Health Minister was accompanied by Industries, Commerce and Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Borah and Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan.

Senior officials present during the visit included Health and Family Welfare Commissioner-Secretary P. Ashok Babu, Additional Secretary Dr Pranati Gogoi, Director of Medical Education Dr Manoj Kumar Choudhury, Director of Health Services (Family Welfare) Kamaljit Talukdar, and Additional Commissioner of Dibrugarh district Pranjal Baruah, along with other senior health department officials and NHM representatives.
