Guwahati, Jan 7: The Assam police on Saturday arrested ex-MLA Hitesh Basumatary after they recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from his house in Assam’s Kokrajhar district.

On Saturday, police recovered one AK series rifle with magazine, 126 rounds of AK ammunition, one M-16 rifle with magazine, and 9 rounds ammunition during a search operation at his residence.

This incident has caused sensation in the area with the family members of the arrested persons questioning the police role as abrupt and without any reason.

“We have got information regarding arms and ammunition kept in his house. A joint operation was launched, (and have made) recovery of huge arms and ammunition. We have arrested him and our investigation has been started,” said a police official.

The arrested ex-MLA was the MLA of the Chapaguri assembly constituency.
