Assam-Meghalaya border talks: Resumption of second phase awaits coordination

Must read

Shillong, Nov 22: The resumption of the second phase of border talks between Assam and Meghalaya remains uncertain, with the Meghalaya government stating that dates will be announced only after coordination with its Assam counterpart is finalized.

“We have to coordinate with the counterpart first and only then we can tell you the dates,” said Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Thursday.

The negotiations, stalled for over a year and a half, have seen repeated assurances from both state governments regarding their recommencement. However, no tangible progress has been made.

When asked about the prospects of resolving the long-standing border disputes, Dhar acknowledged the complexity of the matter, saying, “We are trying, but let us see since the issue is complicated and not that easy.”

In the second phase, both states aim to address differences in areas of: Langpih, Borduar, Deshdoomreah, Block I-II, Psiar-Khanduli, and Nongwah-Mawtamur. These areas represent some of the most contentious zones along the 885-km border shared by the two states.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma recently emphasized the heightened sensitivity of the disputes under discussion in the second phase. “The second phase of talks involves more sensitive and complex areas compared to the first,” he noted, stressing the need for caution and thorough deliberation.

Both governments have reiterated their commitment to resuming discussions, with plans for joint visits to disputed areas by the Chief Ministers of both states. However, these visits are yet to materialize.

The resolution of these disputes remains a significant priority for both Assam and Meghalaya, as communities in the affected areas continue to await clarity and resolution.
