Guwahati, Sept 28: Ten days after the passing of legendary singer Zubeen Garg, his Kahilipara residence in Guwahati continues to draw people from every walk of life—Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, Manipuri, Karbi, and many others—who come to pay tribute, offer prayers, and mourn together.
The outpouring of grief stands as a testament to the deep love and respect Zubeen commanded as a cultural icon, one whose music transcended faith and community, uniting Assam and beyond.
On Sunday, members of the Muslim community held special prayers at his residence, while the Sikh community conducted an Ardas (prayer ceremony) seeking eternal peace for his soul and strength for his family.
A local woman, fighting back tears, said:
“It is truly heartbreaking that our beloved Zubeen da is no more. Today marks the 10th day, and we came here to pay our homage. We lost Dr Bhupen Hazarika some years ago, and now this year, we have lost Zubeen da. For me, he was a legend, and his songs will forever live in our hearts. I have seen people leave their homes just to come here, only to pay their respects and catch one last glimpse of him.”
Visiting Garg’s residence on Sunday, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) chief Hagrama Mahilary told the media:
“We came to meet Zubeen Garg’s family today. It feels good to be here, though we could not come earlier due to the elections. Assam has suffered an irreparable loss with Zubeen’s death. We will build a memorial park in BTC in his honour, and once we form the government, we will also erect a statue to commemorate him.”
