Assam Rifles detains 24 Myanmar nationals with fake Aadhaar Card at Manipur

Imphal, Oct 8: Security forces have detained at least 24 citizens of Myanmar with fake Aadhaar Cards along the international border in Manipur.

According to the Assam Rifles, the detained include 14 women and three minors who had crossed over to the border district Tengnoupal of Manipur.Sources said the Myanmar nationals were intercepted at the Army checkpoint at Khudengthabi on Tuesday around 3 pm. They were on their way to Churachandpur district accompanied by a man from Bulin Champhai in Mizoram which also shares a porous border with Myanmar and currently providing shelter to displaced Myanmar refugees.

Moreh police station has registered a case and all the Myanmar nationals have been booked under the Foreigners Act.

The incident comes a week after 11 Myanmar nationals were detained at the Imphal Airport while trying to board a Delhi-bound flight with fake Aadhaar cards. A district magistrate remanded the 11 to police custody for further investigation.

Mizoram provides refuge to Myanmar refugees

Mizoram, that shares ethnic ancestry with the people of Chin State in Myanmar, has been providing refuge to over 12,000 people from the country after the Junta coup that toppled its democratic government on February 1, 2021. The country has seen series of incursions and clashes since then between the people led by their government-in-exile and the Junta.

Of the total detained in Manipur, nine are from Mungswa, Khutan village in Myanmar and 15 others belong to Butalen and Toyero villages, all in the Sagaing Division in Myanmar that shares borders with Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Part of Mynamar included in Greater Nagalim demand

An earlier demand of Greater Nagalim by National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN), an insurgent outfit born out of discontent with the Indian Government after the Shillong Accord 1975 and is active in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh besides Nagaland, also included parts of Sagaing Division which, according to them, is inhabited by Naga people.
