Guwahati, May 22: A full-grown Royal Bengal tiger was beaten to death by a mob of several hundred villagers in the Dusutomukh area of Assam’s Golaghat district on Wednesday.
According to local reports, the tiger had been roaming the area for over a month. Residents claimed that it had recently killed a man in the nearby Chelek village and continued to pose a serious threat to human lives.
On Wednesday, a large mob—estimated to be in the thousands—from the greater Khumtai region gathered and launched a violent attack on the animal, using sticks and sharp weapons to kill it.

Villagers alleged that despite repeated appeals, forest officials failed to take timely action to capture or tranquillise the tiger.
“We were living in fear for weeks, yet the department took no serious steps. This tragedy could have been prevented,” said a local resident.
Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia condemned the killing, calling the incident “unfortunate and regrettable.” He urged the government to intervene and stressed the need for stronger measures and preparedness in managing human-wildlife conflicts.
