Guwahati, Oct 20: A two-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Assam is set to leave for Singapore today to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of iconic singer Zubeen Garg.

The team, led by SIT Chief and Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta and Investigating Officer Tarun Goel, will coordinate with Singaporean authorities under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) framework to collect crucial evidence and verify key leads.

According to official sources, the SIT will carry out an on-ground investigation in Singapore, retracing Zubeen’s movements during his stay and reviewing material evidence related to his final hours. The team will examine CCTV footage, electronic trails, and financial transactions to reconstruct the sequence of events preceding his death.

Investigators have already recorded statements from ten Assamese expatriates who were in Singapore at the time of the incident. Their testimonies have reportedly provided significant insights into the singer’s engagements abroad and the individuals he interacted with.

This marks the first international phase of the high-profile investigation, which has drawn nationwide attention and widespread emotional appeals for justice.

The move follows Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent announcement that the state government had formally requested the Union Home Ministry to invoke the MLAT with Singapore, ensuring full cooperation between both countries in the probe.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister on Sunday unveiled a 10-point initiative to honour Zubeen Garg’s legacy.

“Our main aim is to ensure justice and preserve his cultural contributions,” Sarma said. “The initiative seeks to honour Zubeen Garg’s spirit and ensure that the legal system delivers justice swiftly.”

Among the measures announced are the installation of a statue in Zubeen’s memory and the establishment of a music college in his name. “These steps are not merely symbolic—they reflect Assam’s collective love and respect for Zubeen Da,” Sarma added.
