Assam wakes before dawn for Zubeen Garg’s final film ‘Roi Roi Binale

Must read

Guwahati, Oct 31: Before dawn broke — when the streets were hushed and the first kettles of tea were just beginning to boil — something rare was happening across Assam. People were gathering outside cinema halls, eyes heavy with sleep but hearts wide awake.

They weren’t there for a blockbuster. They were there for Zubeen.

Though the icon is no longer among us, his spirit filled every screen and seat as Roi Roi Binale — the dream he had nurtured for years — finally came alive. The morning wasn’t just about cinema. It was about homecoming, memory, and love.

Just hours before the release of Roi Roi Binale — the final film of her late brother Zubeen Garg — Palmee Borthakur took to Facebook late last night to pen an emotional tribute that has deeply moved fans across Assam.

In her heartfelt post, Palmee remembered Zubeen as a soul who embodied both resilience and divinity.

“Goldie da, one day I told you, ‘You are a Phoenix’. You looked at me with that curious spark and asked, ‘Why?’ I said, ‘I just feel it’… Maybe because I saw that unyielding courage in you — the strength to rise from any situation twice as powerful. That’s why I felt it,” she wrote.

Continuing her message, she added:

“Tomorrow you will again rise from the ashes with your stronger and undefeatable flight! Spreading your magic! You were born a human being and reached divinity! নৰ, নৰোত্তম… নাৰায়ন (Man, the noblest man… divine)!”

Posted just before midnight, her words struck a deep emotional chord. Fans flooded the comments with memories, songs, and tears. Many called it both a farewell and a blessing — a sister’s final note to a brother who became an immortal force in Assam’s cultural and musical history.

And when Roi Roi Binale premiered at 4:25 a.m. at Matrix Cinema Hall in Guwahati, Palmee’s post had already gone viral. As the lights dimmed, many in the audience held their phones up, reading her words again — calling it “the most beautiful send-off” to the artist who gave them music, memories, and meaning.

Across Assam, a single empty seat became the most meaningful one in every theatre. Reserved for Zubeen Garg, it stood as a quiet tribute — a reminder that his presence still lingers in the spaces he once filled with music and laughter.

At Guwahati’s Matrix Cinema Hall, the gesture took on poetic form. A sofa, draped in a crisp gamosa and adorned with his framed photograph, faced the screen. It was as if Zubeen had simply changed seats — choosing to watch his dream unfold from somewhere beyond.

In Dhekiajuli’s Nakshatra Cinema Hall, a life-sized cutout of Zubeen sat regally in the front row, gazing at the audience like a king at his own coronation. Some fans clapped. Others quietly wiped away tears. Legends, they seemed to agree, never really leave — they just move to a different light.

When Roi Roi Binale premiered at 4:25 AM on Friday, it wasn’t just a movie release — it was a pilgrimage. Fans queued through the night, some carrying flowers, others singing softly under the stars.

Roi Roi Binale was Zubeen’s most personal project, a film that carried his music, his spirit, and his philosophy. Though he never lived to see it completed, the people of Assam made sure his vision reached the world — a gesture that turned grief into gratitude.

The scale of Roi Roi Binale’s release is unprecedented in Assamese cinema. The film is screening in 94 theatres across Assam, with a staggering 456 shows every day.

In Guwahati alone, 13 theatres are hosting 157 shows daily, some starting as early as 6 AM. The excitement has spread far and wide — from Bijoynagar’s six daily screenings and Mangaldoi’s five, to Bongaigaon’s thirty across two halls.

Tezpur leads the celebration with 42 shows a day across four theatres, followed by Tinsukia (16), Jorhat (21), Lakhimpur (20), and Dibrugarh (12). Even the smaller towns — Diphu, Haflong, and Margherita — have joined in. Everywhere, tickets are selling out within hours.

The magic of Roi Roi Binale has spilled beyond Assam. The film is now screening in major Indian cities and in Arunachal Pradesh — from Itanagar’s nine daily shows to Mumbai’s 12 screenings across 10 theatres, Delhi-NCR’s 26, and Bengaluru’s 23.

Cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Kochi have also joined in. Zubeen’s music, it seems, still speaks to those who may not understand every lyric but feel every note.

“We are waiting for this film to release and today I along with my friends come to watch the film. The film will break all the records of of Assamese film. Everybody should watch the film because it was the last film of Zubeen Garg,” said a fan of Zubeen Garg.
