From Dover to Calais in 13 hours and 5 minutes, the endurance athlete achieves one of open-water swimming’s toughest feats just three years after learning to swim.
GUWAHATI, July 4: Assam’s Ankita Konwar has scripted history by becoming the first Assamese woman and the first woman from Northeast India to successfully cross the English Channel, completing the legendary open-water swim from Dover, England, to Calais, France, in 13 hours and 5 minutes as part of an international relay team.
The relay team entered the water at 1.30 am and completed the crossing at 2.35 pm (London time). The swimmers were presented with their medals on Friday, marking the successful completion of one of the world’s most demanding endurance challenges.
The English Channel, separating England and France, is regarded as one of the toughest open-water swims in the world because of its icy waters, powerful currents, unpredictable tides and rapidly changing weather. A successful crossing is considered one of the highest achievements in endurance sport.
What makes Konwar’s accomplishment even more extraordinary is that she only learned to swim three years ago.

In that short span, she has transformed herself into one of India’s leading endurance athletes, completing a Full Ironman in Barcelona, finishing the demanding T100 Triathlon in Dubai, and now adding the English Channel crossing to her growing list of achievements.
“The English Channel is far more than a swim—it’s a journey of resilience, teamwork and trusting yourself when nature tests every ounce of your spirit,” Konwar said after the crossing.
“Carrying the Indian flag while representing Assam and the Northeast is an honour I will cherish forever. If someone like me, who wasn’t even a swimmer once, can stand here today, then anything is possible with consistency and courage,” she added.
Konwar said she hopes her journey inspires more women and young athletes to push beyond perceived limits and pursue ambitious goals.
Her latest achievement adds another landmark to a sporting journey that has inspired fitness enthusiasts across India, demonstrating that extraordinary endurance feats can begin with a single decision.
Having conquered the English Channel, Konwar says she is already setting her sights on her next endurance challenge.
