Agartala, July 4: Tripura is poised for a major boost to its rail connectivity, with Chief Minister Manik Saha announcing on Saturday that the state will soon receive its first Vande Bharat Express. The announcement came as he flagged off the new Agartala–Karimganj–Agartala MEMU train service from Agartala Railway Station.
Describing the Vande Bharat as a game-changer for connectivity between Tripura and the rest of the Northeast, the Chief Minister made the announcement during the inaugural programme attended by Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee and senior railway officials. While the route and launch timeline are yet to be announced, the proposed service marks another significant milestone in Tripura’s railway journey.
Over the past few years, Tripura has witnessed a rapid transformation of its rail network with broad-gauge connectivity, new express services and stronger links with Assam, significantly improving access to and from the landlocked state. The newly launched MEMU service between Agartala and Karimganj is expected to strengthen regional connectivity by providing faster and more affordable travel for commuters, students, traders and passengers travelling between southern Assam and Tripura.

The upcoming Vande Bharat is expected to become Tripura’s fastest passenger train, offering semi-high-speed travel with modern passenger amenities. Its introduction will place Tripura among the growing list of Northeastern states connected by India’s flagship train service.
The announcement also reflects the Centre’s continued push to strengthen rail infrastructure across the Northeast. Improved connectivity is expected to boost tourism, trade, business travel and regional integration while reducing travel time to neighbouring states.
The development comes close on the heels of the launch of the Agartala–Narangi Express, the first direct train connecting Agartala with Narangi near Guwahati, further strengthening Tripura’s place on the expanding railway map of the Northeast.
With the MEMU service now operational and the Vande Bharat on the horizon, Tripura’s railway network appears set for another major leap forward.
