Assam’s Durga Puja festivities steeped in tribute to Zubeen Garg

Must read

Guwahati, Sept 30: Durga Puja celebrations are underway across Assam, but this year, the festivities are deeply overshadowed by the passing of legendary singer Zubeen Garg, who died in Singapore on September 19.

Puja committees across the state have turned their celebrations into platforms of remembrance, with mandaps paying homage to the singer whose music has long been the soundtrack of Assam’s Durga Puja.

In Guwahati, pandals are resonating with Zubeen’s songs, while many committees have set up special corners dedicated to his memory. Visitors can be seen offering respect, treating the Puja as both celebration and condolence.

The Kharghuli Sanatan Mandir Durga Puja, which marks its 50th Golden Jubilee this year, has dedicated the milestone celebration to Zubeen. “For 50 years, we have celebrated Durga Puja here. This year was supposed to be special, but after Zubeen da’s demise, we cancelled all cultural programs. Only the rituals of Maa Durga’s worship remain, and the puja is dedicated entirely to his memory,” a committee member said.

At the Chatribari Sarbajanin Debopujasthan Samity, where the pandal features a patriotic theme with depictions of fighter jets, submarines, and the Indian Army, a section has been reserved for a special tribute to Zubeen A collage traces his journey through music and cinema. “We had planned an Indian Army theme, but after Zubeen da passed away, we felt it was necessary to honour him too. He was more than a diamond for Assam,” said Subrata De, a committee member.

Young visitors at several mandaps echoed a common sentiment—that playing Zubeen’s songs is the most fitting tribute. “Durga Puja will return every year, but Zubeen da’s music makes this one unforgettable,” one devotee said.

Across the state, special shraddhanjali sessions and musical dedications are planned, ensuring that the beloved singer’s presence is felt at every corner of Assam’s Durga Puja this year.
