Guwahati, Mar 1: A transgender advocate Swati Bidhan Baruah has been arrested on charges of alleged murder this afternoon in Guwahati.
The arrest of Swati comes after body of one Mansur Alam was recovered, who is believed to have had a relationship with Swati. The body was found hanging at the deceased residence in Pandu.
Swati had filed an FIR earlier today alleging rape charges on Alam.
Alam’s family have alleged that Swati had developed a relationship with the deceased while he was employed at Swati’s residence for the past one and half year.
But their union was fraught with turmoil, with Alam allegedly enduring mental anguish inflicted by Swati over an extended period, as claimed by the family members.
Angry mob trashed Swati’s home and vandalised her office. The mob also assembled at the Jalukbari PS and demanded Swati’s arrest.
Assam police has arrested Swati in connection with the alleged murder. The case has been referred to the All Women Police Station at Pan Bazar.
Swati was one of the judge in the Lok Adalat held in Guwahati recently.
