Beyond politics: AASU-backed forum charts Assam’s economic future

Guwahati, June 29: Could Assam’s next big movement be economic rather than political?

That was the central theme on Monday as the AASU-backed frontal organisation, Asom Unnati Sabha, held its second annual convention in Guwahati, calling for district-wise planning and a long-term strategy to accelerate Assam’s economic growth.

The convention, held at the Damodar Dev International Auditorium, brought together representatives of various ethnic communities, student organisations, farmers’ groups and grassroots leaders to deliberate on ways to strengthen the local economy, enhance productivity and create sustainable livelihood opportunities across the state.

Addressing the gathering, AASU adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya said the idea of a planned economic movement for Assam had been envisioned for a long time and that Asom Unnati Sabha was created to translate that vision into action.

“We have been trying for a long time to organise a planned economic movement for Assam’s development. Through Asom Unnati Sabha and conventions like these, we want to brainstorm and develop ways to effectively implement that vision across the state,” Bhattacharya said.

He stressed that Assam’s development cannot follow a one-size-fits-all approach, as every district has its own strengths, challenges and resources.

“Each district has its own potential and its own drawbacks. We cannot adopt a common strategy for the entire state. Through discussions like these, experts and stakeholders can suggest development models tailored to the specific needs of each district,” he said.

According to Bhattacharya, delegates from different districts presented proposals highlighting how district-specific planning could unlock local resources and drive inclusive economic growth.

The discussions centred on agriculture, entrepreneurship, rural livelihoods and community-led development, with participants exploring ways to strengthen local production, generate employment and build a more self-reliant economy.

Organisers said the convention is intended to evolve into a year-round platform for development planning, bringing together experts, policymakers and community leaders to formulate long-term strategies rooted in Assam’s unique resources, human capital and local aspirations.
