Bikers set off to create mental health awareness in South West Garo Hills

Ampati, Sept 07: In an effort to promote mental health awareness, the District Mental Health Programme organized a bike rally in South West Garo Hills on Thursday. This initiative coincides with the upcoming World Mental Health Day and is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of mental health in our communities.

The bike rally was officially inaugurated by Dr. Matgrik. K. Sangma, the Nodal Officer of the District Mental Health Programme for South West Garo Hills. The event saw enthusiastic participation from several bikers, who are part of the A•kawe Motorcycle Club, Tura along with the district’s dedicated medical and health staff. The bikers donned “Mental Health Matters” graphics on their tee-shirts, sending a powerful message of support for mental health.

The rally commenced at the Multi Facility Centre in Ampati and covered key areas including Salmanpara and Purakhasia, concluding at Mahendraganj. The bikers embarked on this journey with the goal of spreading public awareness on mental health issues and encouraging open conversations on the subject.

In addition to the bike rally, District Mental Health Program, South West Garo Hills, will also organize a cricket match with the theme, “Spend time playing games to keep oneself free from stress,” as part of the “Suicide Prevention Week” observance. This cricket match will feature police personnel facing off against the medical staff of South West Garo Hills. The match is scheduled to take place on Saturday at the Betasing playground, under the Betasing C&RD Block.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. M.K. Sangma extended a warm invitation to individuals seeking support, encouraging them to seek help through counselling services. He emphasized that anyone in need of counselling can freely walk in or dial the 24×7 helpline number 9362749485 for assistance.
