Guwahati, Apr 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday asserted that the BJP’s stance is against illegal infiltration from Bangladesh and not against the indigenous Muslim community of Assam, accusing the Congress of politicising the issue ahead of elections.
Addressing a poll rally in Kaliabor, Shah said, “The BJP is against ‘ghuspethiyes’ (illegal immigrants), not against indigenous Muslims of Assam. The Congress has politicised the issue and is giving it a communal spin ahead of polls.”
He alleged that Congress had encouraged illegal infiltration into the state and was now attempting to frame the issue along religious lines for electoral gain.
“What did Congress give to Assam during its rule?” Shah asked, drawing a comparison between fund allocations. “Between 2004 and 2014, when Congress was in power at both the Centre and the state, Assam received ₹1.28 lakh crore. In contrast, between 2014 and 2024 under BJP rule at the Centre, the state received ₹9.78 lakh crore.”
Stepping up his attack, Shah said the Congress should “stop dreaming” of forming the next government in Assam. “The BJP-AGP alliance has been in power for 10 years and will continue for at least another 15 years,” he said.
Highlighting what he described as key achievements, Shah pointed to major infrastructure and development initiatives over the past decade. He also cited honours such as the Bharat Ratna for Gopinath Bordoloi and Bhupen Hazarika, recognition for Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, and the granting of classical language status to Assamese.
“Assam was once known for bomb blasts and unrest, but under the BJP government, more than 20 peace accords have been signed, leading to over 10,000 youths laying down arms. Today, the state is moving towards peace and development,” he said.
Shah was campaigning in support of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate Keshab Mahanta, a senior minister in the current state government.
Reiterating his criticism of past Congress governments led by Tarun Gogoi, Shah said the BJP had delivered far more development in the last decade than what was achieved during the previous 15 years of Congress rule.
