Boko villagers foil suspected cattle smuggling attempt

Must read

Boko, June 2: Fresh concerns over alleged cattle smuggling routes operating through Assam’s Boko region have surfaced after villagers intercepted a vehicle carrying cattle reportedly headed towards Meghalaya, raising questions about the effectiveness of enforcement measures in the area.

The incident occurred on Monday night at Choikata, where local residents stopped a Mahindra pick-up van allegedly transporting five cattle. While the driver and handyman reportedly managed to flee the spot, villagers alerted the police, who subsequently seized the vehicle and the animals. The vehicle, bearing registration number ML-12-2330, was taken to the police station for further investigation.

Local residents claim that the movement of cattle through parts of Boko has become a recurring phenomenon, particularly during night hours. According to sources, vehicles carrying cattle allegedly enter through the Bandapara Tiniali area, pass through Gamerimura and proceed towards Meghalaya.

Residents further alleged that organised networks are involved in facilitating the movement of cattle across the region despite periodic enforcement drives. Some locals claimed that the trade continues to operate openly and have demanded stricter surveillance along known transit routes.

The latest seizure has once again brought attention to the broader issue of illegal cattle transportation in Assam, a state that shares extensive inter-state and international connectivity. Over the years, security agencies and law enforcement authorities have conducted multiple operations against cattle smuggling syndicates operating along routes leading towards neighbouring states and international borders.

Police officials have not yet disclosed whether the seized cattle were being transported with valid documentation or whether any specific smuggling network has been identified in connection with the case. An investigation is underway to trace the absconding individuals and determine the origin and intended destination of the animals.

The incident has renewed calls from local residents for stronger monitoring of vulnerable transit corridors and stricter action against those involved in illegal cattle transportation. Many villagers argue that unless organised networks behind such operations are dismantled, isolated seizures alone may not be sufficient to curb the trade.
