Guwahati, Aug 22: Cachar police have arrested a 28-year-old woman and her boyfriend for allegedly killing her husband by administering a high dose of sleeping pills.
The accused woman, a mother of two, was identified as Rina Begum, while her accomplice was named as Bashiruzzaman Laskar alias Biju (33), who worked as the victim’s personal driver.
The victim, Imran Hossain Barbhuiya (38), died on August 11. Initially, his family was told that he had suffered a cardiac arrest, and he was buried the next day by Islamic rituals.

“Later, family members raised suspicions that it was not a natural death. They lodged a First Information Report (FIR) on August 20, following which the body was exhumed,” said a police official.
The FIR, filed by Imran’s brother Najib Barbhuiya at Dholai Police Station, led to the registration of a case under Sections 103 (murder), 111 (prevention and punishment of organised crime), 25 (acts done without intention to cause death or serious injury), and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

According to Najib, Rina and Biju had been in a relationship for a long time. “They killed Imran by mixing a heavy dose of sleeping pills in his food on the night of August 11. At the time, Rina claimed he had died of a heart attack, but suspicions grew when, just four days later, she publicly demanded a share of his property,” he alleged.
Najib, along with two close friends, Rahul Ahmed Laskar and Bachan Laskar, conducted a private inquiry and uncovered WhatsApp chats between Rina and Biju. “In one message, Rina told her lover: By now, the body has decomposed in the grave. Don’t worry. The chats also revealed their murder plan and their intention to flee abroad,” Najib claimed.

“When police confronted Biju with the chats, he confessed. He admitted giving Rina the sleeping pills, which she mixed into Imran’s food,” Najib added.
Imran had recently been elected as president of the Rajnagar-Khulichhara Gaon Panchayat in the South Dhalai area of Cachar.
