Shillong, Nov 11: In a major development towards helping the residents of Tura to overcome the issue water shortage, the Centre has sanctioned Rs 100 crore for implementation of Tura Bulk Water Supply Scheme.
Informing this on Thursday, Minister in-charge Public Health Engineering Marcuise N Marak said the scheme was sanctioned under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) and it will help to address the shortage of water supply faced by Tura town.
“After going through all procedures, a tender will be floated to ensure work starts immediately,” he said while informing that the Government of India had sanctioned Rs 100 crore for the project.
He said more projects will be proposed as the existing projects are not sufficient enough to meet the demand of water supply in Tura.
“We are proposing to create a reservoir which will be available for any use, for irrigation, for eco-tourism etc,” Marak said while asserting that such a reservoir is also needed to help fire tenders in case of fire emergencies.
Further, the minister informed that the government is also seeking the Centre’s support for water supply to the New Shillong Township.
