Guwahati, Aug 28: The Centre will release a ₹100 commemorative silver coin to mark the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary bard of the Brahmaputra.
The Ministry of Finance has issued a gazette notification stating that the coin will be circular, 44 mm in diameter with 200 serrations on its edge, and made of 99.9% pure silver. It will weigh 40 grams, with a permissible variation of 0.005 grams.

Welcoming the decision, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X, calling it “a timeless recognition for Dr Bhupen Hazarika” and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making the centenary celebrations more special.
Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal described the coin as a “Bridge of Harmony between the Ganga and the Luit,” and said it symbolised the nation’s gratitude. “This gesture will not only keep Bhupen da’s memories alive but also inspire the nation to celebrate his immense contributions,” he added.
The year-long centenary celebrations will begin in Assam from September 8. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on September 13-14 to take part in the celebrations.
