Guwahati, Oct 4: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday alleged that certain groups attempted to derail the investigation into singer Zubeen Garg’s “murder or death” by creating unrest in Guwahati on the day of the tragedy.
Addressing the public in a Facebook Live session, Sarma said, “Those who used to invite Bangladeshi singers like Momtaz to Assam suddenly declared themselves ‘Zubeen fans.’ This community was misusing the grief of genuine fans to strike back at us for acting against encroachers and infiltrators.”
He further remarked, “You may dislike the government for carrying out evictions, and you may be angry with me for that. But don’t use Zubeen as a shield to take revenge.”
The chief minister questioned the sincerity of the groups, stating, “During his lifetime, in which of your regions did you ever invite Zubeen to perform? You brought artists from Bangladesh, but not him. And now, suddenly, you are his biggest admirer? If you want to take revenge on Himanta Biswa Sarma, then take it on me—but do not misuse Zubeen’s name for political gain.”
Sarma cautioned that Zubeen’s legacy should not be weaponised for vested interests.
“These people are using his name as a weapon after his death. If you want to target me, do it directly—but not in Zubeen Garg’s name. We, too, have done politics and know how you are trying to take advantage,” he added.
