Imphal, Oct 5: Postal services have resumed in Manipur’s Churachandpur district after remaining suspended for more than two years due to the ethnic violence that erupted in the state in 2023.

The services were halted following the outbreak of clashes between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities on May 3, 2023. On Friday, a mail van reached Churachandpur town, the district headquarters, around 11:30 a.m., marking the official resumption of operations.

“It unloaded letters, parcels, and other consignments before departing for Imphal, the state capital, more than an hour later,” said an official, adding that the restoration of postal services is a positive sign of normalcy returning to the region.

“Postal services are vital in a place like Manipur. After the ethnic violence, everything came to a standstill. Today’s resumption is a hopeful step — once again, people can receive their letters,” said a resident of Churachandpur.

The ethnic conflict, which stretched over several months, claimed more than 250 lives and displaced around 62,000 people across the state.

Officials stated that with the imposition of President’s Rule earlier this year, peace and normalcy have been gradually returning to Manipur.
