Guwahati, Oct 5: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasised that cooperation from the Assamese community in Singapore is vital to ensure progress.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma clarified that his visit to Zubeen’s family today was purely personal. “I spent time with Garima Saikia Garg, Zubeen’s father, and the family as a gesture of solidarity. I did not discuss the case, investigations, or legal matters. I was there to share their grief,” he said.
The Chief Minister said the awaited viscera report, due on October 10, will be critical in determining the cause of death. “By October 11, we will have a clearer picture of what happened to Zubeen,” he added.
On Shekhar Goswami’s allegation that Zubeen was poisoned, Sarma said such claims must be treated as witness statements.
“Witnesses can say anything in their depositions. It is the police’s responsibility to record them in the case diary. The investigation will decide whether an accused is shielding themselves or attempting to frame others,” he explained.
Highlighting the importance of cooperation from those abroad, Sarma appealed to the Assamese community in Singapore to assist investigators. “If people in Singapore do not come to Assam, the probe cannot move forward effectively. Local communities must urge them to cooperate; otherwise, it will keep on going in circles,” he cautioned.
The Chief Minister confirmed that several key individuals, including Shekhar, Shyamkanu, and Siddharth, are already in custody or under investigation in Assam.
Reiterating the government’s resolve for transparency, Sarma announced the constitution of a judicial commission headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court.
“Anyone can come forward and share information. The probe will be conducted thoroughly, discreetly, and under judicial supervision to ensure the truth emerges,” he said.
