Guwahati, Nov 16: A massive fire broke out on Sunday at the Post Office building near Gate No. 8 in Maligaon’s Bharalumukh area, sending thick smoke across the neighbourhood and triggering panic among residents.
The blaze, initially suspected to be caused by a short circuit, was later found to have intensified after a cylinder explosion inside a third-floor residence where a couple was reportedly celebrating their daughter’s birthday.
According to locals, the flames erupted suddenly, followed by a powerful blast that shook the building and sent dense smoke billowing across the area.

Multiple fire tenders from Fire & Emergency Services were pressed into action, and firefighters managed to rescue two persons trapped inside.
The victims, identified as Deb Choudhury (47) and Pompi Choudhury (36), were pulled out in critical condition. Despite immediate medical attention and rapid transport to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), both succumbed to their burn injuries.
Emergency teams continued to monitor the building to prevent any further flare-ups.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the explosion and the sequence of events that led to the deadly blaze.
