David Murasingh walks 2,500 km to Delhi, echoing Gandhian spirit for Tripura’s indigenous rights

Guwahati, July 25: Inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Tipra Motha leader David Murasingh is walking over 2,500 kilometres from Tripura to Delhi to demand justice, identity, and land rights for the indigenous Tiprasa community.

Murasingh described the journey as a movement for survival. “This is not just a march — it’s a movement for the survival of every Tiprasa,” he said after arriving in Guwahati.

The journey began on July 5. Though he initially planned to walk alone, Murasingh said he soon found support from all quarters. “King Vishwamanikya stood with us. The entire Tiprasa community joined in. People welcomed us with food, water, and shelter — not just in Tripura, but also in the Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, and Shillong. This movement has become unforgettable,” he told reporters.

Emphasising the non-violent nature of the march, Murasingh said it was firmly rooted in Gandhian philosophy. “If Gandhiji could walk to win independence for India, we can walk to Delhi for Tripura. We believe in his ideals of peace and perseverance,” he said.

The memorandum he carries outlines three core demands- Greater Tipraland — a constitutional solution to protect the identity and rights of indigenous Tripuri people, implementation of the Tipra Accord — which, despite promises of completion within six months, remains pending even after 18 months and curbing illegal immigration from Bangladesh — which Murasingh called the biggest threat not only to Tripura but to the entire Northeast.

The march has been gaining attention and support across the region. Ratna Devbarma, a supporter who met Murasingh in Guwahati, said, “We are proud and emotional. No one has ever taken such an initiative for Tripura. We’re here not just as Tripuris but as members of various communities — united in our support.”
