Shillong, August 21: The Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Prestone Tynsong, was received in a Private Audience by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Wednesday.
This historic meeting makes Tynsong the first leader from Meghalaya to be granted an audience with the newly elected Pontiff, just three months after His Holiness assumed office as the Head of the Catholic Church and Sovereign of Vatican City.
During the audience, Tynsong conveyed the greetings of the people of Meghalaya and humbly sought the apostolic blessings of the Holy Father upon the State. His Holiness Pope Leo XIV graciously imparted his blessings and conveyed his special greetings to the people of Meghalaya, encouraging continued efforts towards fostering peace, unity, and harmony in the State.

In the course of the discussion, the Deputy Chief Minister apprised His Holiness of the prevailing situation in Meghalaya and sought his prayers for lasting peace and development. The Pope expressed appreciation for the dedicated efforts of political and religious leaders in addressing the challenges faced by the State.
Since his election, Pope Leo XIV has been actively engaged in significant pastoral and international initiatives, including presiding over the Jubilee of Families, holding a special meeting with Eastern Catholic communities, and addressing the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), where he highlighted the urgent need for global solidarity in the fight against hunger and food insecurity.
