Shillong, Oct 14: The A·chik State People’s Front (ASPF) submitted a memorandum to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari demanding Dhubri-Phulbari bridge to be officially named as the “Pa Sonaram R. Sangma Bridge.”
“This naming will serve as a historic recognition of one of the earliest freedom fighters, social reformers, and political visionaries of Northeast India — a leader whose ideals of unity, justice, and self-determination continue to inspire generations of Garos,” said Adv. Bernita R. Marak, General Secretary of ASPF.

She said, “Pa Sonaram R. Sangma was the first Garo leader to demand a distinct administrative and political autonomy for the Garos under the British regime, laying the ideological foundation for later movements that culminated in the creation of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council and, eventually, the State of Meghalaya itself,”.
“Despite his monumental contribution, Pa Sonaram R. Sangma remains largely unacknowledged in national history. Naming this bridge after him would correct a longstanding oversight. The bridge directly connects regions historically associated with Sonaram’s movement — the Garo plains and hills — symbolizing unity and continuity of his vision,” she said.

She further added, “It will inspire the youth of Meghalaya and Assam, strengthening their sense of belonging, cultural pride, and participation in nation-building,”.
The Dhubri–Phulbari Bridge, under execution by NHIDCL with international assistance from JICA, will span approximately 19.3 km across the Brahmaputra River, connecting Dhubri (Assam) and Phulbari (Meghalaya).
Upon completion, it will be the longest river bridge in India, transforming connectivity between the plains of Assam and the western region of Meghalaya, boosting trade, agriculture, education, and healthcare access.
