Dibrugarh, Aug 4: The four accused in the brutal murder of Dibrugarh businessman Uttam Gogoi were produced before a magistrate on Sunday.
The victim’s wife, Boby Sonowal Gogoi, and Dipjyoti Buragohain have been remanded to four days of police custody, while two minors, including Gogoi’s daughter, were sent to a Juvenile Home in Jorhat.
Police revealed that the 52-year-old businessman was allegedly killed in a conspiracy orchestrated by his wife and 16-year-old daughter in Barbaruah, Dibrugarh. The shocking crime came to light eight days after Gogoi was found dead at his residence in Lahon Gaon on July 25.
According to investigators, Gogoi’s teenage daughter, a Class 9 student, was in a relationship with 21-year-old Dipjyoti Buragohain, one of the prime accused. Together with her mother, she allegedly plotted the murder, paying Buragohain and a 17-year-old accomplice a substantial amount of money along with gold jewelry to execute the crime. Police later recovered the jewelry during the arrests.
“They attempted to stage the crime as a robbery, but inconsistencies in their statements and forensic evidence exposed their role,” said Dibrugarh SSP Rakesh Reddy.
The arrests have sent shockwaves through the otherwise quiet neighbourhood of Lahon Gaon. Outraged locals in Barbaruah staged protests demanding strict punishment for the accused
