Shillong, Aug 4: A research team from the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has developed a 100% natural antimicrobial cream using rare black turmeric (Curcuma caesia Roxb.), marking a major breakthrough in herbal skincare.
The cream, now patented and published in the Indian Patent Journal on July 25, 2025, is free from chemicals and has shown excellent results in treating skin problems like acne, eczema, sunburns, infections, and even chronic bedsores.
Led by PhD scholar Rana Mukherjee under the supervision of Dr. Deboja Sharma and Prof. G.D. Sharma, the team spent five years testing the cream across Karbianglong, Khetri, Moirang, and Nongpoh. The formulation also includes aloe vera, coconut oil, and sandalwood oil—making it safe and effective for all skin types.

“This is a completely herbal cream with strong healing power. In one case, a patient with severe bedsores fully recovered,” said Dr. Sharma.
Unlike many so-called herbal creams on the market that contain chemical additives, USTM’s cream is fully plant-based, offering antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, and UV protection benefits.
The team is now in talks with pharmaceutical companies to bring the product to market but says funding remains a key challenge. They hope industry and public support will help make the cream widely available.
