Dibrugarh, Sept 6: A Self Breast Examination (SBE) Demonstration Model developed by noted breast cancer researcher Dr. Gayatri Gogoi has been granted a design patent by the Patent Office, Government of India.
The patent (Design No: 395195-001) was recently issued by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks.
Dr. Gogoi, an Associate Professor at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, and Adjunct Researcher at ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre, North East, designed the model to address late diagnosis of breast cancer among Indian women. Despite being an external organ, breast cancer is often detected at advanced stages due to low awareness and limited access to feasible screening methods such as mammography, which remains costly and requires technical expertise.
“Breast cancer is the leading cancer globally as well as in India. Every four minutes a new case is diagnosed, and nearly 50% are detected at advanced stages. Raising awareness and implementing user-friendly screening programs is urgent,” Dr. Gogoi said.
The SBE Demonstration Model offers a simple, affordable, and eco-friendly tool to train frontline health workers such as ASHAs and ANMs. It is lightweight, safe, culturally acceptable for public demonstrations, and designed from everyday materials. Unlike current training methods that rely on diagrams, the model provides a hands-on “show how” experience, empowering women to practice self-examination with confidence.
Dr. Gogoi emphasized that the model could be a “game changer” if adopted by primary health centres and sub-centres, enabling early detection and saving lives. Her work was supported by AMCH and Pratishruti Cancer and Palliative Trust. A prototype demonstration is available on YouTube under “Self Breast Examination by Dr Gayatri Gogoi.”
