Tura, Nov 13: The District Football Association (DFA) Tura, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA), has successfully concluded a four-day intensive referee training programme aimed at raising officiating standards across the Garo Hills region.
The objective of the programme was to build a pool of competent referees capable of handling competitions at various levels.
Held from November 10 to 13, the programme combined early morning practical sessions at the P.A. Sangma Stadium with theory classes at the SMELC Building. The sessions were conducted by seasoned instructors—Joy Chandra Singh, an AIFF referee instructor from Manipur, and Ricky Synnah, Head of Referees at the MFA.
A total of 24 participants, including two aspiring female referees, took part in the training. The course covered key areas such as flagging techniques, assistant referee movements, warm-up routines, offside interpretations, and whistling methods. Initially planned for referees in West Garo Hills, the programme was expanded to include participants from neighbouring districts.
The trainees completed the Level 8 football referee course, an entry-level certification designed to equip new referees with a strong grasp of the Laws of the Game and develop the practical skills needed to officiate state-level matches and beyond.
Speaking to Hub News, DFA general secretary Gamcheng R. Marak said the association is confident about the programme’s impact. He noted that the objective was to build a pool of competent referees capable of handling competitions at various levels. Marak added that several promising talents were identified during the training and will receive further guidance to hone their skills.
With the programme now concluded, DFA Tura hopes to see a marked improvement in the quality and consistency of officiating in upcoming tournaments, contributing to stronger and more inclusive football development across the region.
