Shillong, Feb 20: Opposition VPP legislator Adelbert Nongrum paid tribute to late Shillong MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon, who passed away in a city hospital.
Speaking in the Assembly on Friday, Nongrum said Dr Syngkon was a “man of passion and charisma” and a humble politician.
“His passing away is a great loss not only for the family but for the party and the state as a whole.”
Nongrum thanked the government for showing solidarity, saying, “I extend my thanks to the government of the day through the chief minister, deputy chief ministers, and government machinery who visited Roberts Hospital to show their solidarity in this moment of grief.”
He expressed hope that Dr Syngkon’s death would bring change in the political mindset, saying, “I strongly believe that let his death bring change in political mindset so that we can ensure real change in our beloved state.”
VPP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit and two other party MLAs – Brightstarwell Marbaniang and Heaving Stone Kharpran – allegedly skipped the session..Later, Basaiawmoit, preoccupied with funeral arrangements, clarified that they had assumed the House would be adjourned, given the government’s earlier decision.
Nongrum conveyed condolences to the bereaved family, saying, “May God Almighty bless his soul and pray that God will reward his departed soul in heaven”.
