Shillong, July 7: Hundreds of farmers in South West Garo Hills received planting materials and agricultural inputs on Monday as the Meghalaya government stepped up efforts to boost horticulture, promote organic farming and diversify rural livelihoods.

The distribution drive, organised by the Department of Horticulture, covered several villages across the district, with beneficiaries receiving vegetable seeds, fruit saplings, bio-pesticides, black pepper planting materials, dragon fruit pillars, vermicompost beds, polyhouse support and sprinkler irrigation equipment.

Under the Chief Minister’s Farm Plus Scheme, quality planting materials, including black pepper, cashew and cinnamon, were distributed to farmers in villages such as Raksanara, Kalaichar, Balughat, Josipara, Merenggipara, Chibongnara, Taranara and Garagre.

Meanwhile, beneficiaries in Kumligaon received dragon fruit planting materials under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), a centrally sponsored scheme aimed at expanding high-value horticultural crops.

Officials said the initiative is part of the government’s strategy to encourage crop diversification, improve farm productivity and create sustainable income opportunities for farmers across South West Garo Hills.
