Shillong, Feb 20: Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma paid rich tribute to late Shillong MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon, reading a biography of his life during an obituary reference in the Assembly on Friday.
All scheduled business was suspended for the occasion.
Dr Syngkon, 56, passed away on February 19. Born on January 6, 1972, in Laitumkhrah, Shillong, he was a dedicated academician and politician.
He received his early education at St Edmund’s School and then completed his schooling at Laitumkhrah Presbyterian School. He undertook his pre-university studies in commerce in Shillong Commerce College.
He obtained his master’s degree in economics and a doctorate in economics from North Eastern Hill University.
Late Dr Syngkon entered public life in 2023 when he contested the Assembly election from Umsning constituency as a candidate of the Voice of the People Party (VPP). He then contested the general election of 2024 from Shillong parliamentary constituency from the VPP where he secured a resounding victory thus becoming a member of the 18th Lok Sabha.
“He was a founding member of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) and served as its general secretary,” Speaker said.
“As a parliamentarian, Dr Syngkon was known for his integrity, intellectual depth, and advocacy for the North Eastern region’s rights and development”.
“While being deeply grounded in his faith, he exemplified humility, compassion and service in both public and private life,” the Speaker said adding “Though I did not have the privilege of knowing him personally, I learned that besides being a good academician, a teacher and a politician, he was a God-fearing person, man of strong faith. Last year in December 2025, he delivered God’s message to our Garo brothers and sisters in Delhi during the advance Christmas service programme of Delhi Achik Christians Fellowship.”
Sangma expressed condolences, saying, “I join this House in paying respect and offer my sincere prayers that our God… give the bereaving members of his family and all his well-wishers and supporters the strength and courage to bear this great loss”.
