Guwahati, Apr 22: An elderly couple allegedly died by suicide in Kalaigaon in Assam’s Udalguri district on Wednesday with a note pointing to financial distress and prolonged illness as the reason behind the tragic step.
According to reports, the couple left behind a note stating that mounting financial hardships and long-term health issues had pushed them to take the extreme decision.
“Neighbours found the bodies of Narendra Saikia and his wife, Damayanti, hanging in the bathroom, with three bottles of pesticide lying on the floor,” a police officer said.
He added, “The couple’s two sons, who were away from home, had been unable to reach them over the phone since morning and requested neighbours to check on them.”
The neighbours alerted the police, who reached the spot along with a magistrate and a forensic team.
The bodies have been sent to Udalguri Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Sources said several items, including a machete (dao), towel, rope, and other materials, were found arranged near the bathroom, indicating possible prior planning.
